Coach Barry
Russell is beginning his 14th season at the helm of the Midland High School
baseball program where Midland High has made 12 consecutive playoff
appearances. In his 26th season as a coach and 25th year as a head baseball
coach, Coach Russell achieved his 500th win last season. Under his guidance,
Midland High has had 10 straight seasons with 23 or more wins -- including
owning all or part of the District Championships in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003,
2005, and 2006 -- things are going very well. The Bulldogs were the state
champions in 2001 and state semi-finalists in 2006. They have been Region I
champions two times -- 2001 and 2006 -- and were in the Regional Semi-Finals in
2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. Tradition and baseball are synonymous with
Midland High School.
Coach "Russ" graduated from Abilene
Cooper High School in 1977 where he led the Cougars to their first district
championship since 1967. He was awarded a scholarship to then Division I Hardin
Simmons University. He started his coaching career at Clyde Junior High School.
He then accepted the Head Baseball position at 2A LaPryor High School where he
started their baseball program, including building the field. They were the
District Champions three times, in the playoffs all four years, and Coach
Russell was named District Coach of the Year three times in a row. He then
moved to 5A Victoria Stroman High School where he coached for seven years
leading them to playoffs in 1992.
In 1996, Coach Russell moved to Midland High.
His record at MHS is 319 wins and 141 losses for a 70% winning mark. He won his
400th game in 2005 and his 500th career game in 2009. His career record stands
at 509 wins, 244 losses and one tie for a .680 winning percentage. Coach
Russell also received the 2001 Texas Sports Writers Association Coach of the
Year. His 2001 team finished Number 5 in the nation according to Baseball
America. He was the Region 1 Director for Texas High School Baseball Coaches
Association from 1999 to 2000. He coached and was the Director of the Senior
Sunbelt Texas All Star Team from 2000 to 2002, and again in 2008. He helped to
lead them to a Sunbelt Championship in 2001 and 2008. Coach Russell was on the
Baseball America National High School Baseball Coaches Association Region 4
National Rankings committee in 2001. In 2004, Coach Russell was selected the
THSBCA North All-Star Coach which is held in Round Rock at Dell Diamond. His
North squad beat the South squad 5-2. He was selected to coach the inaugural
Greater West Texas Baseball Coaches All-Star game in 2002, as well as the 2006
and 2008 GWTBCA All-Star game between the 3-5A All Stars and the 2-5A All
Stars.
His playoff record at Midland High School is a stellar 50 wins and 28 losses
for a 64% winning percentage. In his spare time, he is an associate scout for
the Tampa Bay Rays. Since 1998, Coach Russell has sent 49 players to college or
professional baseball. Sixteen have received Division I scholarship offers, 10
have gone to a NCAA Division II or III Scholarship or program, 23 have received
a junior college scholarship and six have gone to play professional baseball.
Coach Russell has three wonderful children and
one fantastic future Bulldog grandson, Kaden, who will be three years old in
April. Heather, 28, is currently a stay at home mother and she is married to
ex-MHS standout pitcher Lee Martin. Jason, 25, is teaching and coaching at
Midland High. Aimee, 22, is in the RN program at Midland College. He is engaged
to the Midland High Journalism teacher, Jill Howbert. |

Jr. Varsity Coach

Randon Johnson |
Randon Johnson
graduated from West Texas A&M University in 2002. He began his coaching
career at Palo Duro High School in Amarillo, where he coached football and was
the head baseball coach. This will be his third season with Midland high
School. Coach Johnson also coaches defense for the varsity football team. He
and his wife Jennifer have two daughters, Jessilyn, 4, and Reese, 2.

JV Purple Coach

Bobby Alvarez |
Bobby Alvarez
graduated from Stamford High School in 1988. He attended Hardin-Simmons
University and completed his degreee in Physical Education at the University of
Texas at the Permian Basin. Coach Alvarez was the athletic director and head
coach at San Jacinto Junior High School for four years. He spent the previous
nine years as a seventh and eight grade coach. Alvarez has been an assistant
coach for the varsity football team for the last three years. He and his wife,
Josie, have two daughters, Sarah, 14, and Macy, 11. |

Coach Ochoa returns to Midland
High baseball to assist in coaching the JY Gold Team. Prior to his return,
Coach Ochoa served as the head baseball coach and special teams football coach
for Stafford High School. He has also coached in Wylie, Kaufman, Cedar Park and
at San Jacinto Jr. High School. He is a graduate of Greenwood High School and
San Angelo State University, where he received his B.S. in Kinesiology and a
minor in Spanish. Coach Ochoa is currently an ESL teacher at Midlnad High. His
wife, Katy, is a third grade teacher at Travis Elementary. They have a 14 month
old son, Wesley, and recently had their second child William. |

Hondo Schneider

Trainer |
Hondo Schneider graduated from
Texas Tech University with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Sports Medicine. He
has served as athletic trainer for the San Francisco 49ers, the USFL Houston
Gamblers, Howard Payne University, Copperas Cove High School and Midland Lee
High School. This is Hondos second stint at MHS. Hondo serves on the UIL
Medical Advisory Committee. His brides name is Marla. They have two
children a daughter Jessica, 20, attending Texas Tech University, and a
son Brandt, 11. |
Jeff Pulley
Trainer |
Jeff graduated from Angelo State
University with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. He is a MHS graduate and
is very excited about becoming a part of the staff at MHS. Jeff has served as
an athletic trainer and strength and conditioning specialist for San Angelo
Saints Hockey, San Angelo Stampede Indoor Football, and for area high schools
around San Angelo. He has also served as a strength and conditioning specialist
for Angelo State Women's basketball and soccer programs through Shannon
Hospital. His wife's name is Christy and they have three daughters Kenzie, 9,
Peighton, 5, and McKyna, 6 months. |
